Year 12 ‘Lunar Design Programme’ Research Project Trip
BackOn Wednesday 29th November, the Year 12 ‘Lunar Design Programme’ research project, in which students are developing design solutions for lunar habitation, visited the University of Kent Engineering department. Students met with academics and were introduced to the breadth of research taking place in the department including biomedical, mechanical, and electronic engineering, before having a tour of the department and its huge range of labs, resources, and equipment. Students also took part in an electronics activity in one of the university research labs using Arduino components. They each constructed an environmental sensor that reads and displays temperature, humidity and air pressure, and programmed the coding needed for it to work. Students were able to take these components away with them and will now use them as an element of their design projects.
The visit is the start of the ‘Lunar Design Programme’ academic mentoring scheme, in which postgraduate engineering students from the University of Kent will support Sixth Form Langton students throughout the rest of the research project as they develop their ideas, research their design solutions, and present their final concepts.
