IVE Lecture Programme
"The desire of knowledge, like the thirst of riches, increases ever with the acquisition of it," Matthew Arnold (1822-1888)
Every Friday morning, Year 12 and invited members from other year groups attend an 'IVE Lecture Series'. The lectures cover a range of powerful, culturally rich topics that contextualise and ultimately empower the core knowledge of our subject curriculums. IVE stands for intellect, vision and endeavour. These values are the beating heart of our Langton Extended Curriculum. Providing our students with the knowledge and experience required to stand out and gain favourable university offers through interviews and applications.
This year our theme is ambitious perspectives, challenging our students to raise their horizons whilst encountering a diverse body of culture. A final aim of the lecture series is to provide students with an interdisciplinary understanding of the world, making links between their subjects from the arts, sciences and beyond, to provide a level of cultural literacy required in a 21st century society. We are inspired by the Radio 4 show In Our Time and often encourage students to access specific talks.
Below are a taste of previous lectures, some of which may be repeated this year:
- The Journey of AI - Dr Joe Watkins, UKC
- Black History Month: 'The cultural and social journey of Rock Against Racism 1976-78'
- "Are we alone in the universe?" Professor Becky Parker
- "My journey to becoming a Bishop" The Rt Revd Rose Hudson-Wilkin, the Bishop of Dover.
- The journey of stand up comedy - Professor Olly Double, UKC
- The German TV series 'Dark' and its cultural journey - Dr Marie Martine, University of Oxford
